Before You Budget for Another Server, Consider the Cloud

For years, the physical server in the back room has been the backbone of many businesses. It stores files, runs applications, manages databases, and quietly keeps operations moving.


But physical servers do not get better with age.

Your IT team remains responsible for configuration, access, applications, data, and other security controls. That shared responsibility is important.


The cloud is not a replacement for cybersecurity. It is a platform that can make a modern cybersecurity strategy easier to implement.

Your Server Does Not Have to Be in Your Building

A physical server is tied to a physical location. That creates risk. A power outage can take down your equipment. A burst pipe can damage your server room. A fire can destroy hardware. A severe storm can disrupt power or communications. Even an air-conditioning failure can cause sensitive equipment to overheat.


Cloud infrastructure separates your critical technology from that single physical location. This can provide significant advantages for business continuity and disaster recovery.

If your office is unavailable, your technology does not necessarily have to be unavailable with it.

demand rather than purchasing hardware for the maximum capacity you might need someday. Instead of asking, “How large of a server should we buy for the next five years?” you can ask: “What does our business need today, and how quickly can we adjust when those needs change?”

Cloud Migration Does Not Have to Mean Moving Everything at Once

One common misconception is that cloud migration must be an all-or-nothing project. It does not. A successful migration begins with an assessment of your existing server environment, applications, storage, licensing, backup strategy, security requirements, and business needs.

For a physical server, consider hardware, licensing, installation, networking, backup equipment, power, cooling, maintenance, repairs, software updates, IT support, security, and eventual replacement.


For the cloud, consider migration planning, implementation, computing, storage, backup, security, and ongoing management.


The right comparison includes total cost of ownership, reliability, security, business continuity, and flexibility.

Start Planning Before Your Server Fails

You do not have to unplug the server tomorrow, and you do not have to move every application overnight. But you should understand your options before the hardware makes the decision for you.
