Not even one of the most recognizable brands in the insurance industry is immune to getting attacked by Ransomware.
News broke around 7a on Friday, 6/20/2025 that Aflac supplemental insurance suffered a Cybersecurity breach that has possibly exposed customer information related to health, claims, Social Security numbers and other personal details.
An email sent by the President of Aflac, Virgil Miller, states that, "Aflac recently detected suspicious activity on its network. Upon detection, we promptly took steps to contain the activity and launched an investigation with the support of third-party experts...due to the rapid response of our team, our systems were not affected by ransomware and the intrusion was contained within hours, which allowed our business operations to remain uninterrupted...the investigation remains in its early stages. At this time, we have not confirmed the extent of unauthorized activity, potentially impacted data, or the customers or other individuals impacted...Based on intelligence coming from the cybersecurity community, we have been told that this incident may be part of a broader series of cyber-attacks targeting the insurance industry."
If your company provides this insurance to your employees, now would be a good time to review your Cybersecurity policies. Remind your employees about suspicious emails:
Red Flags to watch for
Any email asking to click a link that looks unfamiliar (hover over the link to check!)
Emails asking them to enter their credentials (username and password) to their company software
Look to see if the email address doesn't match the senders name
If there is an attachment they aren't expecting
Pay attention to poor spelling and grammar throughout the email
If the sender doesn't address you by name
If your company doesn't have a backup plan for this kind of cybersecurity risk, check out our Advanced Cybersecurity Service page to learn more about our protection options: Network security (firewalls and VPNS), Endpoint Protection (safeguarding employee devices), Security Awareness Training (for your employees), Data Encryption (protect sensitive data from unauthorized access), and Incident Response (prepare for and respond to cybersecurity incidents effectively with our response plan).
